UNIT 2 VOCAB:
- 16th amendment-allows congress to make income taxes- people have pay taxes to the gov't based on how much $ they make- people who make more $ pay more taxes
- 17th amendment-allows voters to elect their senators( representatives for the Senate(part of congress))- makes politics more democratic- the people have more power ( MA Senators are currently Scott Brown (R) and John Kerry (D))
- 18th amendment- PROHIBITION- outlawed making or selling alcohol- lasted from 1919 to 1933 (repealed by the 21st amendment)
- 19th amendment-1920- women the right to vote in national elections
- Jim Crow Laws- Laws kept African Americans from being equal to white Americans-these laws kept segregation occuring in the south- they made whites and blacks use separate schools, bathrooms, water fountains, parts of restaurants or trains, movie theaters, hotels,etc..- THESE LAWS DO NOT SHOW PROGRESS
- Tenement Act of 1901- law that made requirements for housing in cities- apartment buildings had to be built more sturdy, had to have indoor bathrooms, lights in the hallways, fire exits, etc..
- Jacob Riis- muckraker- wrote a book called "How the other half lives"-led to people paying attention to the tenements in NYC and the subsequent Tenement Act
- Muckrakers- people that showed/presented the bad problems in society that was in need progress
- Reform- a change or improvement of what is corrupt
- Ida Tarbell- a writer who wrote about the unfairness of John D. Rockefeller's oil monopoly
- Lincoln Steffens- Journalist who worked alongside Ida Tarbell
- Upton Sinclair-exposed the idea that the meat people were eating was dirty
- Thomas Nast- exposed the wrongs and lies of the gov't with cartoons
- Legislation-Laws made by the legislative body
- Meat inspection act- 1906 the gov't had to make sure the meat was inspected to make sure it was healthy, the muckraker who helped make this happen was Upton Sinclair(his book was called The Jungle)-he exposed the idea that the meat people were eating was dirty
- Pure food and drug act- was made tp protect other food(besides meat) and medicines
- The federal reserve act-set up a new banking system, the idea was the federal gov't would oversee the banking industry more
- the Clayton anti-trust act - ban monopolies
- Standard Oil Co.- - John D. Rockefeller ran a monopoly of oil, he united all the oil companies
- Northern Securities Company- formed in 1902, controlled Northern pacific railway,Great northern railway,Chicago,Burlington and quiny railroad: was sued under the Sherman Anti-trust act
- Theodore Roosevelt- - 26th president(Republican) of the U.S. during the progressive era times from 1901-1909; he publicized antitrust cases against large companies and fought for reform;he was vice president and the president was assasinated(mikenley);he mostly represented both parties(Demorcratic & Republican); he wanted to make things fair by taking some power away from these wealthy businessmen;"square deal" he wanted everyone to be equal and kind of even things out to be fair;
- Woodrow Wilson-28th president, he was part of passing the Clayton anti-trust act, Federal reserve act, etc.
- Progressive Era- a time period of improvements from the 1890s to the 1920s
- Progressivism- a reform movement; change; many people trying to make changes in society
- progressives- reformers (the people) who helped change society
